In this module you will learn how to break bad news to a patient or carer, the different ways of doing so, and how you might best prepare yourself to observe and reflect on this type of encounter in your placement.

 

 

At the completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Adopt a professional mindset in the clinical setting when breaking ‘bad news’
  • Reflect appropriately on how bad news is communicated to and received by patients
  • Identify the different approaches/models that may be observed in practice
  • Reflect on how you would integrate this learning about approaches for breaking ‘bad news’ into clinical practice
  • Identify the importance of self-care and strategies and/or sources of support to debrief on the impact of breaking bad news
