Radiation Science Essentials

RadiationScienceEssentials.jpg

Learn radiation science fundamentals – to understand how it works and, crucially, how we can use it safely. Led by experts in the field, in this dynamic online course you'll learn radiation science essentials – everything from where radiation comes from and how it interacts with matter, to the science behind X-rays. You'll learn to wield relevant terminology with ease, solve basic calculation-based problems like a pro, and explore cutting-edge applications such as particle therapy.

Investigating the core principles and practical applications of radiation science, you'll build a strong foundation of knowledge relevant to a wide range of jobs in and out of the nuclear field – from management and regulation, to working in education, healthcare or research.

There are no entry requirements. However, you will need easy access to a computer and the internet, basic computer literacy skills and proficiency in English. While this is a standalone course, you may benefit from the knowledge that builds across our suite of nuclear science and safety micro-credentials, in the following order: Nuclear Science Essentials, Radiation Science Essentials, Essentials of Radiation Safety and Essentials of Nuclear Safety and Security.
This course provides a foundational understanding of the principles and applications of radiation science. It is ideal if you already work in health, emergency management, science education, regulation, policy development or research and wish to enhance your knowledge. Plus, it provides a robust foundation of skills for those looking to enter any of these fields, or, indeed, the mining, waste management, sustainability or military sectors.

You’ll learn how to:

  • speak the language of radiation with precision
  • appreciate how charged particles and photons interact with matter
  • get to grips with how X-rays work
  • understand where radiation comes from and how we measure it
  • tackle basic calculations like a pro
  • describe photon energy spectra and their applications
  • explain how radiation physics is used in cutting-edge particle therapy.
